Sunny side

Walking around the gorgeous villages near Tafraoute, where we were staying as tourists, was a wonderful experience. Warmth, wind, sun, breezes and the sound of the odd goat or sheep.  Few insects, if we were away from the market.  In our tourist hotel, we did not experience water or power shortages, but what is the situation for the inhabitants of these villages?  The electrical wires are obvious, and the satellite dishes, but where and what is the source of power?

2006 case study on Morocco, prepared on behalf of the International Institute for Sustainable Development had some answers. It reported that the country imported an estimated 97% of its energy needs.  Yet Morocco is so evidently bathed in sun and swept by wind. An ideal location for solar and wind energy technologies. And so we will find out.
