Hampi, Karnataka Nov 27-Dec 1

The area around the town of Hampi was the capital of the Vijayanagar empire, which had conquered and consolidated neighbouring dynasties and fiefdoms to extend a Hindu empire throughout south India. This empire maintained itself for more than 300 years (AD1336-1646). It repelled Muslim invasions from the North, and European incursions from coastal points. Huge armies were recruited across the castes, and included the use of hundreds of elephants and horses.
